Maggie Got Chicks

Maggie has been focused on getting chickens for about six months. She even put together a presentation listing the costs, benefits, cons and counter arguments about getting chickens. Gary finally gave in, and we ordered the little buggers in April. He, Mags and our neighbor at the lake, Cort, have been building a chicken coop.

Yesterday, they arrived via USPS. We got the call and drove to the local post office to pick them up. They came in a little bitty box and were peeping like crazy.

Mags made up a brooder box and stuck the little suckers in there. They are so cute!

Maggie is now the proud chicken mama of eight little babies. She got Wyandottes, Australorps and Easter Eggers.

I'm looking forward to the fresh eggs in about six months!

Sailing in the BVI's...

I've been waiting a few days since we returned from our vacation sailing in the BVI's to let my thoughts about the trip settle out. I decided to write about what I learned on this trip.

Here are some of my discoveries:

  • Storms at sea while on a sailboat can be just as violent as those on land in Texas.

  • I should not wear this goofy hat in public ever again. ;)

  • And...maybe Gary shouldn't either. What were we thinking?

  • Diane and Doug are a really cute couple.

  • Don't hold your finger on the button to raise the main sail too long...even if Doug keeps telling you to. Broken main sail...although, it kept us on land for extra time for hiking and drinking at the Soggy Dollar bar.

  • Gary really likes hammocks...

  • We can get along with people we don't know very well for a whole week on a tiny little boat and make great new friends like Pat and Ron.

  • "Driving" the sailboat is fun! Mental note to self: don't let Gary talk me into wearing this cover-up in public again. It garnered way too much attention!

  • You can get some exercise on a sailing trip (other than lifting drinks). Our hike on Jost Van Dyke led to some beautiful views.

  • And finally, the BVI's have probably the second most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen.

Carroll Medical Academy Awards Banquet & Silent Auction

Last Friday night was the Carroll Medical Academy Awards Banquet and Silent Auction. It was held at the Marriott Solana in Westlake.

We'd like to thank our friends who donated items for the silent auction. The Feedstore BBQ donated a yummy dinner for two:

Our friend, Rhonda Boswell, and her company, Barbed Heart Creations donated this beautiful pink necklace and earrings.

Cort Henderson of Hidden Oak Cabins on Lake Texoma donated a night's stay.

Ramses Meier from Omni Mandalay Hotel donated a night at their beautiful hotel. We supplemented with a little champagne basket.

The silent auction table was full of goodies:

The tables were beautifully decorated:

Gary and I had fun looking over the auction items before dinner. I'm holding the scrapbook for Cort's cabins in case you're wondering.

Mags had fun hanging out with her friends

I had fun hanging out with the other parents, but in this picture I'm with the CMA Student President, Rebeccah. She's such a sweet girl and a real "go-getter".

All in all, it was a fun event and a great way to end the school year.
